Pregnancy & Immunity

When a woman is pregnant many of the bodies processes become heightened.

During pregnancy there is an increase in the production of immune mediators, hormones and neurotransmitters to sustain pregnancy.

Some of the major hormones are estrogen and progesterone, others are oxytocin, relaxin, cortisol, prolactin, calcitonin, thyroxine, erythropoietin, insulin and HSC (Human Chorionic Somatomammotropin).

According to the Annals of Clinical & Laboratory Science 32:87-92 (2002) “Pregnancy is associated with a depression of the immune inflammatory system”. This can also be seen by the relief of inflammatory arthritis often seen during pregnancy. In light of this it is possible that allergy tests may also be altered during pregnancy.
